about

I had a dream. In this dream I was a young Hank Williams, but virtually unknown. I was playing for change near my old school when some young children were taunting me for some reason and stole money out of my guitar case.

I began to sing a song. I woke up from the dream, the song still swimming around my head. I wrote down the first few lines and sang the melody into my phone. Later that day I developed and finished the song. It became this song.

True story.

lyrics

I was a farmer, I was a maid,
I was a stray cat asleep in the shade
oh lord oh lord

I was a matchbox, I was a blade
I was a tin can tied to a string
oh lord oh lord

I was a hammer, I was a lathe
I was a song verse scratched on a page
oh lord oh lord

I was a hilltop, I was a cave
I was an infant so well-behaved
oh lord oh lord

these things and more, your cages adorn
cold canopy that slowly conforms
these are our arms to be absorbed

I was an instinct, I was a thought
I was the answer no one sought
oh lord oh lord

I was the morning, I was the frost
I was the deer that the headlights caught
oh lord oh lord

I was the highway, I was the grade
I was the secret someone saved
oh lord oh lord

I was a lover, I was a sage
I was an old man so well-behaved
oh lord oh lord

these things and more, your cages adorn
cold canopy that slowly conforms
these are our arms to be absorbed
